Murgatroyd's Garden
Murgatroyd’s Garden is a completed body of work (2024 - 2025) centred on a constructed folkloric world, developed through drawing & painting, physical objects, and narrative gesture. The series presents the garden as a guarded space, part sanctuary, part threshold, all overseen by the fictional figure of a local witch named Morbid Murgatroyd.

Drawing on folklore, ritual, and theatrical framing, the works explore ideas of protection, accumulation, and control. Animals, symbols, and artefacts appear as guardians or intermediaries, suggesting systems of belief that are deliberately assembled rather than inherited.

Unlike traditional folklore, which evolves anonymously over time, Murgatroyd’s Garden has been consciously authored. The series embraces artifice, performance, and story-making as tools, allowing meaning to emerge through repetition, atmosphere, and suggestion rather than fixed narrative.

This body of work was completed in 2025 and remains a self-contained exploration of invented myth and ritualised space.
